lyrics

You waited ’til your friends went to bed
You called up my phone, “are you up”, you said
It was four in the morning but I pretended
That I was wide awake
I said “I’m wide awake”

I walked through the aqueduct in the dark
All I saw was the ivy around the bark
You waited up on the hill and you looked for the stars
But the clouds wouldn’t fly away
You said “let’s leave here right away”
We went down to the river by your dorm
Everything was still foggy from the storm
And there was a breeze but the tide was calm
Not a current for miles away
No waves for miles away

And it was so quiet that all you could hear
Was our whispering voices and sips of beer
And the rustling leaves from the distant deer
Trying to find their way
Through the woods inside the haze
You should “if you should go, I would understand”
I said “it’s five in the morning, I have no plans”
I gave you my sweatshirt and held your hand
As we watched the tide escape
A slowly drifting tide escape

When you woke at sunrise the clouds had left
You fell asleep in my sweatshirt on my chest
You said I probably should take it and get some rest
I said “you can keep it I’ve plenty left”
And I wanted to stay there and waste away
But you had to move out and go home that day
There was so much more that I wanted to say
But instead I walked you back
To your room and I watched you pack

Years later I went back to that spot
But the entrance was gated off and blocked
It said “residents only” with a passcode lock
And so I tried and tried
Every number, I tried and I tried
I gave up and went back to that hill
It was covered in new dorms that they built
Everything I remembered all was changed
But the memories burned into my brain
So I drove and I drove, and I drove away
Over the bridge where they told me the tolls were raised
They changed the name cause the old one was blown away
So this is goodbye, Dobbs Ferry
I’ll see you in my memories
